They’re individual because we used a sort of 3D layering process in AfterEffects to composite them into a scene.</p> <p>These were originally sketched (during classes, oftentimes) in my sketchbook. Then I traced them with pencil onto tracing vellum and applied a grayscale inkwash to them. The inkwash gave them the real-media quality I was looking for.</p> <p>Colors were done with PaintTool SAI and my eight-year veteran Graphire3 tablet. SAI is a godsend, especially as the recent Photoshop editions have not scaled well against my four-year old laptop. So lightweight, not a RAM-whore like Photoshop. It also provides a more “painterly” set of tools that would send me to CorelPainter, but for a fraction of the price. I highly recommend it.</p> <p>While I had originally intended upon coloring the work with watercolors, after several tests I found that the primary colors of the tribes clothing ended up looking flat. Real media does not work as well with high-saturated colors, in my opinion. Unlike digital painting, you can only go down in saturation.</p> <p>I got about fifteen hours of sleep pulling this together (among other things) the week before the Class Films premiered. Just, no sleep that week. At times there were eight of us pulling all-nighters in the basement of the BGC, working on editing, special effects, sound, score, and so on. Ten, our director, got even less sleep than I did (ten hours, I think?). Many spent more hours on the film—I ended up topping the sleepless leaderboard simply because I did not skip a single class. What now. Perhaps I have too much pride as a student.</p> <p>Speaking of which, I’m trying to figure out ways to continue education post-college. And really over. I graduated yesterday. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. It hasn’t hit me yet. I know a lot of my friends are pumped “to be done” but I’m one of those people that absolutely loves school and would become a professional undergrad if that were a viable occupation. Learning is the bomb.</p> <p>Hey, now that my full-course load is over, I can finally update this thing.</p> <p>Some highlights from this semester:<br/>-Finished a 20,000-word rough draft of my novella for Prof Mazz’s Novella class. I hope that I can expand and finish the second draft this summer. I’ll hopefully have the (very rough) chapters posted soon.<br/>-Our Senior Class Film, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KiraFilm" target="_blank">Kira</a>, nearly swept the Class Film Competition! We won 8 of the 10 awards, including Best Original Screenplay which I co-wrote with my friend Tim. It’s a Wheaton College record.<br/>-Became an official member of <a href="http://churchrez.org/" target="_blank">Church of the Resurrection</a> last fall and was confirmed as an Anglican last week. One more person on the Canterbury Trail, as we say.<br/>-Myself and a group of students organized Wheaton’s first Day of Silence. About a hundred people participated, which constitutes a decent percentage of our tiny school.</p> <p>The above contains artwork from the art montage at the beginning of <em>Kira</em>. People seemed to really love the artwork at the beginning, which I found surprising, but I suppose you’re never really satisfied by your own work and can always pick out the flaws. I’ll post more art later.</p> <p>As a final disclaimer, I take no responsibility for the apostrophes present in the names and tribes of these characters. It went really well. I have some amazing friends that took care of me post-op while my mom was out of town.</p> <p>The first two weeks of rehab sucked. But things are going well. My physical therapists were aggressive and not at all opposed to torturing me, which I greatly appreciated. Sometimes you get these therapists that are scared to hurt their patients and rehab moves along at a snails pace.</p> <p>Second semester of summer school orgo wasn’t so hot. Missed too much class due to my surgery and couldn’t catch up.
